Following her two older brothers’ roommates outside, the doctor handed Ruan Shu a box of milk and a few candies.
Ruan Shu widened her eyes, looking at him. “Are these for me?”
She seemed a bit taken aback.
The doctor smiled and nodded, “They’re for little kids.”
Ruan Shu politely thanked him and was about to accept them when she looked at her small hands and hesitated, pulling them back.
Her hands were covered in blood.
It was only then she remembered that she’d been holding her third brother’s hand, which was bloody.
The doctor chuckled, “There’s some water over there. Go wash up.”
Ruan Fengsi led her to wash her hands, even wiping her face with a tissue.
As for her hair, Ruan Fengsi thought, expressionless, that they’d have to wash it when they got home. This little dummy hadn’t even noticed her hands were bloody, and in her hurry, she’d scratched her head.
Her hair was originally snow-white, and now she had streaked it with blood.
“All right, we’ll wash your hair when we get back.” He patted the not-so-bright head of the little one.
Ruan Shu blinked in confusion.
When they returned, Ruan Shu saw that the doctor had placed the milk and candies where she’d been sitting earlier.
Thinking for a moment, she fished two mooncakes out of the box and looked at her older brother expectantly.
“Big Brother, would you like to go with me to give the doctor some mooncakes?”
Ruan Fengsi’s eyes held a trace of amusement. “And who was the milk for?”
Ruan Shu answered softly, “For… me.”
“And the candies?”
Ruan Shu replied in a small voice, “Also… for me.”
Ruan Fengsi spread his hands, “So, you see, everything was for you. Why should I go with you to give something back?”
Ruan Shu’s little face wrinkled in a mix of worry and determination. “Then… I’ll go by myself.”
Her slightly disappointed figure made the other three guys nearby almost raise their hands to volunteer to go with her!
But one look from Ruan Fengsi kept them in line.
Once Ruan Shu had left, Rong Jun scratched his head in confusion. “Why didn’t you go with Shushu, Brother Si?”
And he didn’t even let them tag along.
Ruan Fengsi stood up slowly, “Shushu’s a bit timid. She hasn’t even started kindergarten because of it. We can’t let her continue like this.”
At this point, the three others understood. He was deliberately helping her build courage.
Meanwhile, Ruan Shu, holding the mooncakes, went off to find the doctor, while Ruan Fengsi trailed behind her, keeping a watchful eye.
Though he wanted to help her build courage, he wouldn’t just leave her alone. After all, everyone here was a university student, and they all looked a bit intimidating. What would he do if his little Shushu got bullied?
The university students: …Can we even look scarier than you?
At that moment, the doctor was busy in the clinic, attending to students.
Ruan Shu, holding two mooncakes, peeked into the room. Her little furry head popped in and out, in and out, as if no one would notice. But, unbeknownst to her, both the doctor and the patients inside couldn’t help but glance toward the door.
Ruan Shu thought there were too many people, so she decided to go back and find someone to give her a little boost of courage.
Just as she was about to leave, someone called out to her.
“Little one.”
Ruan Shu froze, slightly nervous, and turned around, responding in a soft voice, “Doctor.”
Then, she quickly walked over, placed the mooncakes in his hands, and said, “These are for you. Thank you.”
Polite little kids are always endearing, and especially when they’re as soft and adorable as her.
After delivering her gift and expressing her thanks, Ruan Shu bolted back, her little feet moving as fast as possible.
The doctor watched her retreating figure, both amused and touched, and looked at the two mysterious little pastries in his hand, feeling unexpectedly pleased.
On her way back, he was soon approached by curious colleagues who wanted to know what had just happened.
Meanwhile, Ruan Shu ran all the way back to the waiting room, her little heart racing with excitement more than nervousness.
She’d delivered the gift all by herself!
Her courage had grown a bit!
Her fluffy tail couldn’t help but pop out and start wagging back and forth; she was genuinely delighted.
In the waiting room, aside from Ruan Fengsi, the other three couldn’t help but sneak glances at the little girl with her fluffy cat ears and tail popping out.
They just wanted to pet her!
Ruan Shu, realizing that her third brother’s roommates were looking at her, quickly grabbed more mooncakes.
Since she’d brought quite a few for her third brother’s friends, after giving two to the doctor, she still had plenty. She handed one to each of the roommates.
“Here, have some mooncakes.”
Seeming a bit shy, she hurriedly handed out the mooncakes and then scurried back to her big brother’s side.
Then she handed one to him, too.
“What kind of fresh treat is this? What exactly is a mooncake?” one of them asked curiously.
Ruan Shu wasn’t quite sure how to explain. She could talk about it with her dad and brothers since they understood, but she didn’t know how to explain it to others, and she didn’t want to lie.
Ruan Fengsi chimed in, “My sister made it herself.”
Rong Jun, who had asked the question, looked at Ruan Fengsi with envy. “Brother Si and Brother Ling, you two are so lucky to have such a sister. Really makes a guy jealous.”
Their parents’ work had often intersected, so the three of them knew Ruan Fengsi but didn’t have as close a bond with him as they did with Ruan Ling’an.
Ruan Fengsi wholeheartedly agreed, lifting his chin slightly. “Of course.”
He looked incredibly proud.
Meanwhile, Ruan Shu sipped her milk beside him, her fluffy tail swaying slightly as she occasionally glanced toward the room with the medical pod and checked the time.
Twenty minutes passed in the blink of an eye, and as soon as time was up, Ruan Shu hopped down from her seat. Seeing that the doctor hadn’t come yet, she hesitantly took a step forward, then pulled back. This time, she gently tugged her older brother’s sleeve. “Big Brother, time’s up. Let’s go find the doctor.”
Ruan Fengsi didn’t refuse this time. He stood up at her tiny, nearly imperceptible pull, his long legs moving at a leisurely pace beside her.
Though he walked slowly, Ruan Shu had to take several quick steps to keep from being left behind with her little short legs.
“Doctor, time’s up.”
With her big brother beside her this time, Ruan Shu peeked her little head into the room and softly called out to the doctor.
The doctor saw her and laughed, “You really care about your brother. All right, I’ll go and bring him out.”
So, Ruan Shu trailed behind him like a little tail, taking small steps as she watched him open the medical pod.
Ruan Ling’an stepped out, his hair and pants wet and still dripping water, carrying a faint medicinal scent.
He frowned, looking down at himself in disdain, clearly wanting to return to the dorm and change as soon as possible.
“Is my brother’s wound fully healed? Does he still need bandages?” Ruan Shu asked, concerned as she looked at the injuries on his body. The wounds had stopped bleeding but hadn’t healed completely.
The medicine was mainly to treat external injuries and promote blood recovery. Naturally, it couldn’t completely regenerate new skin in such a short time.
The doctor took out a bottle of ointment and some other supplies for treating external injuries. “Here. I’ve got a lot to handle, so I’ll leave it to you to apply the medicine for him. For the larger wounds, this dressing will help close them up.”
Ruan Fengsi didn’t move to take them, and Ruan Ling’an raised his chin, saying he didn’t need them.
Ruan Shu quickly chimed in, “He does need them, he does!”
Then she stepped forward to carefully take the items, listening intently as the doctor explained how to use them.
Ruan Ling’an, with a hint of impatience, hooked a finger on her collar, pulling her along as he headed out. “Such a hassle.”
Ruan Shu, not finished listening: Wait up!
