Hong Kong Detective [90s] Chapter 69

Please Call Me an Expert (Part 1)

Old cases resurfaced, long-standing injustices see the light of day again.

Team B’s latest investigation into a cold case, utilizing newly established fingerprint databases, blood type comparisons, and restructured clues, has apprehended a murderer who had been lurking in the darkness, hidden for twelve years.

Sometimes the murderer is right beside you, yet you dwell in darkness, blind to their vicious nature.

Advancements in technology have transformed many once-useless leads into crucial pieces of evidence, leaving no place for criminals to hide.

At this moment, everyone should be thankful for the progress in technology, even the Major Crime units suppressed by the scientific departments owe a word of thanks to ‘Brother Da Guangming’ and Sir Xu.

The murderer does not need capturing; he was already imprisoned five years ago for an arson case.

The Major Crime unit submits new evidence, significantly extending his incarceration.

Tonight, Sir Fang is treating everyone, surely including the forensic science and medical examiner departments—so many mouths to feed that even the usually extravagant Father Fang feels a chill at the back of his head.

“Let’s eat at the street food stalls tonight, save some money and still enjoy ourselves,” Jiayi suggests with a smile.

“Little Eleven has learned to save money for Brother Yue, huh?” Gary tilts his head and raises an eyebrow in a playful manner.

“The major housekeeper of Team B isn’t for nothing, oh~” Jiayi completely misses Gary’s tease and laughs heartily, carefree.

However, Fang Zhenyue sternly glares at Gary, who, scared, quickly joins Jiayi in laughter.

“Street food stalls! We drink and do not return until we’re drunk!”

“Fried oyster cake! Stir-fried clams with black bean sauce! Salt and pepper mantis shrimp! Stuffed treasures trio!”

“Spicy wine conch! Baked fish maw!”

“Chicken hot pot!”

“A must-have: whimsical cuttlefish paste!”

Hearing everyone calling out the dishes, Jiayi’s eyes widen, saliva crazily secreting, unable to wait any longer!

“Do I have a share?” Qiu Sushan leans on the door frame, scanning everyone.

“Madam honors us with her presence, of course, you’re welcome. But are you willing to dine with these noisy guys?” They are loud.

Fang Zhenyue tilts his head slightly, his slightly longer bangs covering his thick eyebrows, softening his usually sharp aura, finally letting people see that he’s not just an ‘old fellow’ in a high position, but truly a handsome and charming young man.

But as soon as he speaks, his deep and solid voice betrays that this is the sound of a man with a broad chest and tall stature. People realize his strength, and with a closer look, they notice this man’s commanding presence is not to be trifled with.

He carries this aura casually, unaware of his naturally menacing jest:

“Madam, what brings you here? Is it because we’ve cracked so many cases, the police are sending us a super big gift package?”

“Sergeant Fang, you need a haircut,” Qiu Sushan remarked as she glanced at Fang Zhenyue’s bangs, then signaled to the young policewoman standing inside, “Is Yi Jiayi free tomorrow afternoon?”

Fang Zhenyue raised his eyebrows inquisitively, and the other detectives from Team B also looked over curiously.

Could Little Eleven have really gotten into some trouble?

“If she’s free tomorrow afternoon, let’s arrange a session on ‘How to Make a Perfect Report’,” Qiu Sushan suggested, her lips curling into a smile as she looked at the pretty and poised young policewoman standing amidst the lackluster crowd, finding her more agreeable by the minute.

Yi Jiayi had only joined Team B a few days ago and was already making headlines and appearing on TV. Now, even the police inspector needed her help to arrange a lecture for the young policewoman.

What a lucky star, truly deserving of the title!

“Ah? Eleven is going to attend the lecture?” Liu Jiaming instantly understood, patting Yi Jiayi on the shoulder and laughing, “No worries, if there’s work tomorrow, we’ll handle it. You go and focus on the lecture.”

“Noooooo~” Qiu Sushan shook her head and chuckled lightly, “She’s the one who will be teaching! All major crime units in West Kowloon must send at least one person to attend. All departments and teams at all police stations in Kowloon can send someone voluntarily. Moreover, Superintendent Huang will personally be there tomorrow, encouraging Sergeant and the inspector to attend as well.”

“How to use a Word document, the formatting, the logic, all of it must be covered, Eleven~”

“Superintendent Huang mentioned that you might have to spare an hour each week for these sharing sessions in the future.”

“And tomorrow, I’m going to attend the lecture too!”

“?” Huh?

Liu Jiaming was so shocked he scratched his ear. A class on making reports using a computer?

And Superintendent Huang is attending too?

“Spot on! Eleven, you’ve struck gold! Show your face in front of the police inspector!” Gary jumped up on the spot, “Do you have the report files saved in your computer? Let me take a look too!”

“Tsk tsk, the old guard is being washed up on the beach~” Lin Wangjiu sighed, barely able to read the words on that big computer. “At such an age, still learning new things,” he mused, smiling involuntarily at Yi Jiayi’s clean and clear complexion.

Are this generation’s youngsters smarter than their elders?

How does Little Eleven always manage to surprise everyone?

“She’s going to teach everyone…” Sanfu blinked and pondered this sentence deeply, took a deep breath, and looked somewhat bewilderedly at the young lady he was joking with.

What kind of adversary is she, really?

The setting sun was already slanting slightly, casting a warm yellow glow into the office, striking Yi Jiayi’s figure.

She turned around, facing Fang Zhenyue, who was leaning against the desk and looking at his new detective with a proud smile, as if not Yi Jiayi, but he himself, Fang Zhenyue, was about to make an appearance in front of the police inspector.

“Brother Yue…” Just hearing the news, she was already getting nervous.

Since her arrival, Jiayi had not seen so many people, let alone a police inspector.

Suddenly, she had to step out of this office, out from under Fang Zhenyue’s wing, stand in front of so many strangers, and give a lecture on Word processing techniques?

She could manage when discussing the case details, completely immersed in the matter, but actually standing on the small podium, under the watchful eyes of everyone, could she… make herself understood clearly?

Fang Zhenyue, however, was not worried at all, seeming even more relaxed, lounging on the desk.

With his right arm propped behind him, he gently placed his left foot on a stool, his right leg stretched out long and straight, his body poised like a sculpture.

“Don’t want to go, huh?” He smiled smugly, “Then just refuse~”

“?” Madam’s brows instantly furrowed into twists, what nonsensical thing was Fang Zhenyue talking about?

“Madam, if Eleven doesn’t want to go, just tell the inspector that we’re busy with a case, we don’t have this kind of American time,” Fang Zhenyue said with a resigned expression.

“No way! Don’t be ridiculous. Jiayi, prepare yourself, tomorrow at 2 PM sharp be at the No.1 meeting room in the major crime unit’s office area, prepare your lesson in advance, got it?” Qiu Sushan glared angrily at Fang Zhenyue, cutting him off.

Afraid that Fang Zhenyue might pull another stunt, she quickly settled the matter in a few words, and without giving anyone a chance to refuse, she turned and walked back to her office.

Fang Zhenyue couldn’t help but chuckle, shouting in the direction of the office door:

“Really can’t refuse? Then I suppose I’ll have to reluctantly do it for Superintendent Huang, Inspector Qiu, and those other inspectors and superintendents, give the lecture~”

Qiu Sushan’s office door slammed shut, and once again, Sergeant Fang had pissed her off, she really looked furious.

After the door closed, there was silence in the Major Crime unit B office for a while, then it erupted into laughter.

“Eleven is incredible, bragging as if beating a drum covered in cowhide, such a big face!” Liu Jiaming laughed heartily, not forgetting to tease Jiayi.

“Let those from major crime units A and C, and those other arrogant teams come and obediently listen to our Team B’s little Eleven’s commands,” Gary also joined in the teasing.

“I’ve never given a public lecture like this before.” Jiayi was worried, in her past life she had only ever participated in university defenses, high school debates, and raised her hand to answer questions in elementary school… She hoped not to embarrass the Team B and lose face instead.

Seeing her still worried, Fang Zhenyue patted her shoulder and pointed out Liu Jiaming’s name, “He will accompany you tomorrow, if you feel nervous, just look at his face, pretend you are just discussing your report with him. Imagine those inspectors and superintendents as just tables, chairs, and flowerpots, okay?”

“Can I really do that?” Jiayi stared wide-eyed.

“Of course, why do you think I always appear so calm at the press conferences for case announcements with Sir Guo? Even though I’m your team leader and might seem impressive, I’m still human and I get nervous too. I just pretend that all the other reporters are things like microphones or trash cans. Those who are taller, I imagine as standing fans or floor-standing reading lamps. Who would get nervous speaking to a bunch of furniture?”

Fang Zhenyue reached across the desk, grabbed a stack of files, and shook them:

“Come on, we still have one hour until the end of the day, let’s go over an old case and see what we can send to our dear colleagues in forensic science and pathology to retest.”

After saying this, he leaned forward, landed on his feet, and distributed the old case files for everyone to familiarize themselves with. As he passed by Jiayi, he patted her on the back and nodded vigorously with a smile.

A sort of electric current seemed to flow from his eyes into Jiayi’s, then settled in her mind.

It was as if Sir Fang was telling her with his eyes: Jiayi, you can do it!

The next afternoon at 1:30 PM, Jiayi was the first to arrive at Meeting Room 1 to familiarize herself with the venue, clearly very nervous.

She stood on the podium, went over the lesson content she had prepared the night before, and practiced in front of the whiteboard before anyone else entered the meeting room.

She stared eye to eye with the other person for quite some time before timidly saying, “Hello.”

The young man, who seemed to be in his early thirties, sized up Jiayi with just a nod, without introducing himself or initiating a greeting, his expression somewhat dismissive.

Feeling awkward, Jiayi took a sip of water and turned to focus on drawing simple diagrams on the whiteboard.

First, she drew a keyboard, then an interface diagram of a Word document…

After finishing the demonstration diagrams, she looked down to arrange the 20 printed report format templates, placing one on each desk, then turned and walked back to the podium.

All the while, she avoided eye contact with anyone—they were just tables and chairs, after all! How could she greet tables and chairs?

As it approached 2 PM, people quickly began to fill the room, and within just 5 minutes, the meeting room was nearly full.

It seemed that every department head could no longer tolerate the poor reports from the officers and was very serious about mobilizing their teams to attend the session.

When Liu Jiaming arrived, he found that the office seats were arranged from back to front. With only 6 minutes left until 2 PM and the back rows all filled up, the front row was completely empty.
